Biotech Careers: Smart Choices…Even if you don’t have a PhD

Biotech Careers

Biotechnology is a combination of biology and technology and is a research oriented science. It is a vast subject and includes many subjects like genetics, biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, virology, chemistry and engineering. This is an interdisciplinary course of science with lot of significance and there are lots of opportunities for youngsters who want to explore their career options in this field. Biotechnology with its sub-fields can be used in many fields, therefore many of them are showing interest in taking up biotechnology as a career because the technical and procedural application of this biotechnology touches many areas of discipline. As the industries are growing there is lot of demand for biotechnologists.

Courses in biotechnology:
1. M.Sc. (Agriculture) Biotechnology
2. M.Tech. Biotechnology
3. M.Sc. (Marine) Biotechnology
4. Medical Biotechnology
5. M.Tech. in Biomedical Engineering

Qualification needed:
► To choose this biotechnology as a career, one must have studied Bi.PC at intermediate level which includes biology, chemistry and physics

► After that they have to opt for a suitable undergraduate program (Bsc, Btech, BE) in biotechnology or any related subjects. Duration of Bsc is 3 years and Btech and BE is 4 years

► Eligibility criterion to get admission in to these undergraduate programs may vary from one institution to another. For BSc they consider physics, chemistry and biology combination of subjects as a basic entry level qualification. For admission in to Btech biotechnology, students have to take common entrance tests like IIT JEE or AIEEE or EAMCET

► After the successful completion of undergraduate program, they can choose master’s in biotechnology. Having post graduate qualification in biotechnology is a must for candidates who wish to enter the growth oriented field of biotechnical applications

► People who are interested in research can go for a doctoral (PhD) program in biotechnology which have ample vacancies in research sector by choosing relevant research paper topic.

Different career opportunities:
There are many fields where these biotechnologists can work like research and development in biotech, operations, quality controller, clinical research, finance and administration in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and biotech sales etc.

Future growth:
People who choose biotechnology can have a bright future with ample opportunities in India.

India has got a very good growth and development in the pharmaceutical market and now it has become a major biotech hub in the world. It is also expected that the industry is going to grow much more by 2020. Because of this many companies and institutes for biotechnology have come up creating many jobs in biotech. Many foreign and Indian investors are investing into this sector and a separate department of biotechnology (DBT) has also been set up which has got a major breakthrough in medical and plant biotechnology, research and regulatory affairs etc. With this there are now numerous biotech jobs in India for fresher’s and experienced. Salaries are also high in this field and there is lot of scope for future career growth. For this reason many students prefer to opt biotechnology, but to achieve success in this field, one has to put enough efforts.
